Here is the link to the department: GRANDVIEW PARKS & RECREATION. The department was started by the Parks & Recreation Commission in 1967 with land purchased from Belvidere Property Owners Association. We continue to grow and develop parks, programs and people! I started in January 2016 and have completed five bond projects: Grandview Amphitheater, Shalimar Park, Splash Park, Shooting Range and The View expansion.
The department is funded by 4 separate funding sources: Park Levy, Community Center Sales Tax, Neighborhood Fund, and General Fund.
We have recently renovated our 14 parks. Our most popular park is Valley Park with over 90,000 visitors each year. We have amenities for all ages: outdoor ping pong table, chess table, active Neos and ropes to name a few. We pride ourselves on staying on the cutting edge of the trends when fiscally possible. Our parks are funded by a Park Levy (12 cent property tax) on our citizens and general fund.
The jewel of our city is our community center, known as The View, is a 60,000 sq ft center with pools, basketball courts, walking track, fitness center, rock wall and room rental space. We host over 120,000 visitors each year between rentals and members. With a membership of over 4,000, we are able to maintain the facility through a local sales tax and patron fees.
In 2016, we completed the amphitheater project in Grandview that holds 5,000 people. We have hosted national acts like Michael Franti, Daya, and Granger Smithand most recently: Matt Maher.
We also host our annual Turkey Day 5K, local KC artists on Friday nights throughout the summer as well as Outdoor Movies at the amphitheater.
We host youth Softball tournaments most weekends in May – June and September – October. This was a small renovation project that packs a punch! We have teams that visit from all over the country and spend their money in Grandview and surrounding areas. We look forward to expanding this park to become more of a regional draw.
